The movement of oxygen through the atmosphere, oceans, rock and living organisms, closely coupled to the carbon cycle through photosynthesis, which releases oxygen, and respiration and decomposition, which consume it. Long-term shifts in the oxygen cycle, driven by changes in the burial of organic carbon, have shaped the atmosphere's oxygen content over the whole of Earth's geological history.
