Phosphorus Cycle

The movement of phosphorus through rock, soil, water and living organisms, distinguished from most other biogeochemical cycles by having no significant atmospheric phase, moving instead through the weathering of phosphate-bearing rock, uptake by organisms, and eventual burial in sediment. Because phosphorus is often the nutrient in shortest supply relative to biological demand, its cycle strongly limits productivity in many freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems.
