An atmospheric circulation cell in which cold, dense air sinks near the poles, flows equatorward near the surface, and rises again around 60 degrees latitude where it meets the mid-latitude Ferrel cell. It is the smallest and weakest of the three great circulation cells but a key driver of polar surface weather and the polar easterlies.
