A volcanic eruption in which relatively fluid, gas-poor magma reaches the surface and flows out as lava rather than fragmenting explosively. Effusive eruptions build broad shield volcanoes over repeated flows and are generally less immediately hazardous to life than explosive eruptions, though the lava itself can still destroy property in its path.
