The Faroe Islands, also known as the Faroes, are an archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean and an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, located between Iceland, Norway and the Hebrides and Shetland isles of Scotland. As of November 2025 they had a population of 54,870 and a land area of 1,393 square kilometres. The official language is Faroese, the terrain is rugged and dominated by fjords and cliffs with few trees, and the islands have a subpolar oceanic climate with mild temperatures year-round. The capital, Tórshavn, receives only about 840 hours of sunshine per year. Norse settlement began in the early ninth century, the islands were initially governed as a commonwealth under the Løgting, and they came under Norwegian rule in the early eleventh century after the introduction of Christianity.
