Sardis was an ancient city in what is now Manisa Province, Turkey, near the town of Sart about 72 kilometers from Izmir, built in the Hermus River valley with its citadel on Mount Tmolus. Capital of the Lydian Empire from the 7th century BC, it reached its height of wealth and power under King Croesus, covering 108 hectares behind walls twenty meters thick and extending influence east to the Halys River, and it later served as a Persian satrapal capital, a Hellenistic cultural center and a Byzantine city that hosted one of the Seven Churches of Asia; Sardis was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2025 for its role as the home of coinage.
