Cardia (Thrace)

Western Asia

Cardia was an ancient city at the head of the Gulf of Melas, now the Gulf of Saros, and the chief town of the Thracian Chersonese on the Gallipoli peninsula in what is now Turkey. Originally a colony of Miletus and Clazomenae, it received Athenian settlers under Miltiades around 515 to 493 BC, served as a regrouping point for Athenian forces in 410 BC during the Peloponnesian War, stayed neutral when Athens took the Chersonese in 357 BC, made a treaty with Philip II of Macedon in 352 BC, and was destroyed by Lysimachus around 309 BC. The city was the birthplace of Eumenes, secretary to Alexander the Great, and of the historian Hieronymus of Cardia.
