Salamis, Cyprus

Western Asia

Salamis was an ancient Greek city-state on the east coast of Cyprus, at the mouth of the Pedieos River about six kilometers north of modern Famagusta. According to founding myth it was established by Teucer, son of Telamon from the Greek island of Salamis, and the city flourished from the 11th century BC through the 7th century AD as an important Hellenistic center, a favored city under Roman emperors including Trajan and Hadrian, and later an episcopal seat under Saint Epiphanius in the Byzantine period. It was abandoned in the 7th century after Arab invasions, when its inhabitants relocated to what became Famagusta.
