Dios Hieron, meaning Sanctuary of Zeus, was a town of ancient Lydia in the upper valley of the Cayster River, near modern Birgi in Turkey, about nine kilometers northeast of Odemis. Absorbed into the Roman province of Asia after Rome annexed the Attalid kingdom, the town was later known as Diospolis, then, from the seventh century, as Christopolis, and from the twelfth century as Pyrgium. Pyrgium fell to the Turks in 1307 and became the capital of the beylik of Aydin. In antiquity the town minted coins inscribed with the name of its Zeus-worshipping citizens.
