Selymbria

Western Asia

Selymbria was an ancient town in Thrace, on the Propontis, the modern Sea of Marmara, about 22 Roman miles east of Perinthus and 44 Roman miles west of Constantinople. Founded as a colony of Megara before the founding of Byzantium, it is attested from at least the fifth century BC, including the involvement of Alcibiades there in 410 BC, and it continued through the Byzantine period. The town was a port and an ecclesiastical center, becoming the seat of a bishop and, by the tenth century, an autocephalous archbishopric; it also struck its own coinage. Its site is continuous with the modern city of Silivri in European Turkey.
