Bolu

Western Asia

Bolu is a city in northern Turkey and the administrative center of Bolu Province and Bolu District, on the main highway between Istanbul and Ankara. Its municipality had a population of 184,682 in 2021, and the town sits at 726 meters above sea level on the southern slopes of a hill. The site was home to the ancient Roman-era city of Claudiopolis, also known historically as Eskihisar, and was the birthplace of Antinous, the favorite of the Roman emperor Hadrian who was later deified. The newer E-80 motorway now bypasses the town center through the Mount Bolu Tunnel, while the older D-100 highway still climbs over Mount Bolu.
