Idyma

Western Asia

Idyma, also called Idymus, was a coastal town of ancient Caria at the head of a gulf near the mouth of the Idymos river, on the site of the modern town of Gokova in Turkey. First recorded in Athenian tax lists of 453 or 452 BCE paying a tribute of 114 drachmae and five obols, it minted coins bearing the god Pan, suggesting a local shepherd cult. From 167 BCE the town became part of Rhodes' mainland territory, the Peraea. Surviving remains include roughly 200 meters of city wall and about 50 rock-cut tombs, explored by the French archaeologist Louis Robert in 1937.
