Tienen is a city and municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant, in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is known in French as Tirlemont. The municipality is made up of the town of Tienen itself and eight other places: Bost, Goetsenhoven, Hakendover, Kumtich, Oorbeek, Oplinter, Sint-Margriete-Houtem and Vissenaken. It covers about 71.77 square kilometres, and at the start of 2026 it had a population of 36,962 people, which works out to roughly 444 inhabitants for every square kilometre. Because it sits in the Dutch-speaking north of the country and also carries a long-established French name, Tienen is a place where both of Belgium's major languages appear in everyday reference.
