Bob Marshall Wilderness

Wilderness Area

The Bob Marshall Wilderness is a congressionally designated wilderness area in western Montana, named for Bob Marshall, a forester and co-founder of The Wilderness Society who spent the 1930s pushing the US Forest Service to protect large roadless areas by regulation. Formally designated under the Wilderness Act in 1964, it extends roughly sixty miles along the Continental Divide and covers just over one million acres of forest, alpine grassland and the limestone reef known as the Chinese Wall. Together with the adjoining Great Bear and Scapegoat wilderness areas, it forms one of the largest contiguous roadless wildlands in the lower forty-eight United States.

It is named after Bob Marshall (1901-1939), an early forester in the federal government, conservationist, and co-founder of The Wilderness Society. In the 1930s while working for the United States Forest Service, Marshall was largely responsible for designation of large areas to be preserved as roadless within lands administered by the Forest Service; he achieved this through promulgation of various regulations.
