Cirta

Cirta was an ancient Berber and Roman settlement that later became Constantine, Algeria. It served as the capital city of the Berber kingdom of Numidia, a key ally of the Roman Republic during the Punic Wars, before falling under Roman rule in the time of Julius Caesar, who repopulated it with Roman colonists alongside Augustus. The city was destroyed early in the fourth century and rebuilt by the emperor Constantine the Great, who gave it his own name; it was later damaged by the Vandals, restored under Justinian I, and declined after the Muslim conquest, though a small community remained at the site for centuries.
