Skikda

Skikda is a Mediterranean port city in northeastern Algeria and capital of Skikda Province and District, with a population of about 250,000 recorded in the 2017 census. Known to the Phoenicians and Carthaginians and later called Rusicade under Roman rule, when it held the largest Roman theatre in Algeria, the modern city was founded by the French in 1838 as Philippeville and developed as a port serving Constantine. Skikda transformed in the 1970s with the development of natural gas, oil refining and petrochemical industries, and it now functions as Algeria third-largest commercial port and a major site for liquefied natural gas production.
