Tizi Ouzou is a city in the Kabylia region of north-central Algeria, serving as capital of both Tizi Ouzou Province and District, with a population of 135,088 recorded in the 2008 census. Founded in 1856 following a French military expedition against Kabyle tribes, it is nicknamed the Capital of Djurdjura and ranks as the second most populous city in Kabylia after Bejaia. Its economy is built on agriculture, particularly dairy production, alongside brick and pharmaceutical manufacturing, and the city is home to Mouloud Mammeri University and the football club JS Kabylie.
