M'banza-Kongo

M'banza-Kongo is the capital of Zaire Province in northwestern Angola, with a 2024 population of 221,141. Founded around 1390 by Lukeni lua Nimi, it served as the capital of the Kingdom of Kongo from its founding until the dissolution of the kingdom in 1915, and Portuguese explorers who reached it in 1483 compared its size to the Portuguese town of Evora. The city was abandoned during 17th century civil conflicts but restored as the kingdom capital in 1709, and in 2017 UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site for the vestiges of the former Kongo capital.
