Maroua is the capital of Cameroon's Far North Region, set in the foothills of the Mandara Mountains along the Ferngo and Kaliao rivers. The area was occupied by the Guiziga people in the 17th century and the Mofu in the 18th, and the city later hosted the signing of the 1975 Maroua Declaration, a maritime boundary agreement between Nigeria and Cameroon. Its population was 201,371 at the 2005 census. Maroua's mainly Fulbe and Fulani population is known for embroidery, leatherwork, jewelry and pottery, and the city is home to the University of Maroua.
