Ngaoundere is the capital of Cameroon's Adamawa Region, founded around 1835 by the Fulani leader Ardo Njobdi on land earlier occupied by the Mbum people. Its name comes from Mbum words for mountain and navel, giving it the nickname the navel of Adamawa; the 2005 census recorded 152,700 residents, with later estimates reporting substantial further growth from immigration. It is a major transport hub as the northern terminus of the Camrail railway from Yaounde, and is home to the Lamido Palace and Grand Mosque.
