The Central African Republic is a landlocked country in the heart of Africa, bordered by six countries including Chad, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It gained independence from France on 13 August 1960. Despite substantial natural resources including uranium, gold, diamonds and timber, it ranks among the world's poorest nations and has faced significant political instability, including ongoing conflict.
