Gbadolite

Gbadolite is the capital of Nord-Ubangi Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, near the border with the Central African Republic and about 1,150 kilometers northeast of Kinshasa. It was the birthplace and residence of longtime dictator Mobutu Sese Seko, who developed it into a lavish urban center nicknamed the Versailles of the Jungle, complete with an airport built to accommodate the Concorde. After forces led by Laurent Kabila overthrew Mobutu in 1997 the city was raided and looted, and in 1998 Ugandan backed rebels captured it and made it their headquarters; its 2015 population was estimated at about 198,839.
