Kananga

Kananga, formerly known as Luluabourg, is the capital of Kasai-Central Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, founded in 1884 by German explorer Hermann Wissmann near the Lulua River, a tributary of the Kasai River. It is the country's fourth most populous urban area, with an estimated population of 1,524,000 in 2021, and was briefly considered as a possible relocation site for the national capital during independence negotiations in 1960; the first Congolese-written constitution was drafted there in 1964, and the city took its present name, meaning a place for peace or love in Tshiluba, in a 1966 Africanization campaign. It is home to the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, described as the largest Eastern Orthodox church in Africa.
