Lusambo

Lusambo is the capital of Sankuru Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, positioned north of the confluence of the Sankuru and Lubi rivers. It was founded in 1890 when the Belgian officer Paul Le Marinel established it as the main Belgian base in the Kasai region to counter Arab and Swahili slave traders, and it grew into a significant colonial military post. The city also saw fighting during the Second Congo War, when Zimbabwean forces in the area faced encirclement by rebel groups in 1999, and it is served by Lusambo Airport.
