Mbuji-Mayi, known until the end of 1962 as Bakwanga, is a city and the capital of Kasai-Oriental Province in the south-central Democratic Republic of the Congo. Thought to be the second-largest city in the country after the capital Kinshasa, with population estimates ranging widely from about 1.48 million to as many as 3.5 million, Mbuji-Mayi grew rapidly around the region's diamond mining industry and remains closely tied to that trade.
