Damietta

Damietta is a port city and the capital of Damietta Governorate in Egypt, on the Damietta branch of the Nile Delta, about 15 kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea and roughly 200 kilometers north of Cairo. The city has long held religious significance as a Catholic bishopric and remains a multiple titular see. Damietta joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities in 2019 in recognition of its educational initiatives. Its population was recorded at approximately 305,920 in 2024, with a wider metropolitan area of around 1,100,000.
