El Mahalla El Kubra is the largest city of Gharbia Governorate and of the Nile Delta, with a population of about 550,000 as of 2024, sitting on the western bank of the Damietta branch of the Nile. It served as the capital of Gharbia from 1320 until the seat moved to Tanta in 1836, and today it is renowned for its textile industry, anchored by the Misr Spinning and Weaving Company, one of Egypt's largest cotton manufacturers and an employer of around 27,000 people. The city drew wide attention between 2006 and 2011 for labor protests and political activism that helped shape Egypt's broader political movements of that period.
