Hurghada

Hurghada is the largest city and capital of the Red Sea Governorate of Egypt, stretching about 40 kilometers along the Red Sea coast between Ras Gharib to the north and Safaga to the south. It grew from a small fishing settlement into an officially established town in 1905, then transformed into a major resort destination after Egyptian and foreign investment began in earnest in the 1980s. The city is a watersports and tourism hub offering windsurfing, kitesurfing, yachting, diving and snorkeling in a warm year round climate, drawing both domestic visitors from Cairo and the Nile Delta and European package holiday travelers; as of 2024 it attracted more than 9 million visitors annually, ranking among the most visited cities in Egypt. Its metropolitan area, with a 2023 population of about 214,247 across 258 square kilometers, includes resort communities such as El Gouna, Sahl Hasheesh, Soma Bay and Makadi Bay along with islands including Giftun and Abu Minqar.
