Naucratis

Naucratis was an ancient Greek trading city in the Nile Delta of Egypt, established around the seventh century BC as the principal, and for a time the only, permanent Greek trading settlement permitted in Egypt under the pharaohs of the Saite dynasty. It functioned as a cosmopolitan emporium linking Greek city-states with Egyptian goods and markets, with several Greek states maintaining their own sanctuaries there. The site is known archaeologically for a large quantity of imported Greek pottery and for the Hellenion, a shared sanctuary built jointly by multiple East Greek cities.
