Jimma is the largest city in southwestern Oromia Region, Ethiopia, developed by the Italians in the 1930s along the Awetu River near Jiren, former capital of the Kingdom of Jimma, which was absorbed into Ethiopia after the death of its ruler Abba Jifar II in 1932. Its population was 207,000 at the 2007 census, with a 2021 estimate of 239,022, and during the Second World War's East African Campaign its Italian garrison held out until July 1941. It is home to Jimma University and the Jimma Research Center, founded in 1968 and known for coffee and spice research.
