Cape Coast

Cape Coast is a city in Ghana and the capital of both the Cape Coast Metropolitan District and the Central Region. It lies about 62 kilometers from Sekondi-Takoradi and roughly 130 kilometers from Accra, and the 2010 census recorded its population at 108,374, mostly Fante people. The city was once the capital of the Fetu Kingdom before European traders built Cape Coast Castle, which the British later made headquarters of the Royal African Company, and Cape Coast served as capital of the Gold Coast from 1821 until the seat moved to Accra in 1877. It is now an educational hub, home to the University of Cape Coast and Cape Coast Technical University, with tourism built around Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and nearby Kakum National Park.
