Mzuzu is the capital of Malawi's Northern Region and the country's third largest city, in Mzimba District within a gap of the Viphya Mountains, with a population of 221,272 at the 2018 census. It grew up around a tung oil estate established in 1947 and achieved city status in 1985; the Viphya Plantation to its south is the largest man-made forest in Africa, and the city is home to Mzuzu University, founded in 1999.
