Iulia Constantia Zilil

Iulia Constantia Zilil was an ancient Roman Berber city, later known as Arzeila, at modern Dchar Jdid in Morocco, about 40 kilometres southwest of Tangier and 13 kilometres northeast of Asilah. Augustus established it as one of three coloniae in Mauretania Tingitana between 33 and 25 BC to settle veterans of the Battle of Actium. It continued afterward as a small fishing community until the Arab conquest in the early eighth century, and its early Christian church, the only one so far found in Atlantic Morocco, attests to Christian practice among Romanized Berbers there.
