Safi is a coastal city on Morocco Atlantic shore and capital of Safi Province, with a population of about 346,000 as of 2024. The city came under Portuguese control in 1488 and remained so until 1541, and during the Second World War American forces landed at Safi on 8 November 1942 as part of Operation Blackstone within the wider Operation Torch. Safi is Morocco's principal fishing port for the sardine industry and also exports phosphates, textiles and ceramics, and it has been home since 1965 to an OCP Group chemical complex that makes it a major center of phosphate processing and fertilizer production.
