Sale is a city in northwestern Morocco on the right bank of the Bou Regreg river directly across from the national capital Rabat, functioning largely as its commuter partner, with a population of 1,089,554 recorded in the 2024 Moroccan census. Founded in the eleventh century as a medieval merchant port and entrepot, Sale became notorious in the seventeenth century as a pirate haven and the base of the Sale Rovers, who formed an independent corsair republic. The city preserves extensive Marinid-era architecture from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries, including its Great Mosque and the Madrasa of Abu al-Hasan, and today hosts the Rabat-Sale region's main international airport, linked to Rabat by tramway.
