Tetouan is a city in northern Morocco's Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, in the Martil Valley near the Mediterranean, with settlement dating back more than 2,000 years to Mauretanian, Phoenician and Roman times at the nearby site of Tamuda. The Marinids built a casbah and mosque there in the late 13th century, and the modern city was rebuilt in the late 15th century by Andalusian refugees fleeing Granada after 1492, earning it the nickname Granada's Daughter. Its population reached an estimated 422,757 in 2024, making it Morocco's 11th largest city; the medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, and Tetouan served as capital of the Spanish protectorate of Morocco from 1913 to 1956.
