The Island of Mozambique lies off the northern coast of Mozambique, between the Mozambique Channel and Mossuril Bay, within Nampula Province. It served as the capital of Portuguese East Africa until the colonial administration moved away in 1898, and it remains a historically significant site tied to that colonial past.
