Polokwane is the capital of Limpopo Province in South Africa and the largest urban center in the country north of Gauteng. It was founded in 1886 by Voortrekkers as Pietersburg, briefly served as the Boer capital of the Transvaal and Orange Free State during the Second Boer War before the British built a concentration camp there, and it was renamed Polokwane, meaning sanctuary in Northern Sotho, on 25 February 2005. It became Limpopo's provincial capital in 1994 and hosted matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup; the 2011 census recorded a population of 130,028.
