Sultanate of Egypt

Historical protectorate, Northern Africa (1914-1922)

The Sultanate of Egypt was a British protectorate in Egypt that existed from 1914, after the outbreak of World War I, to 1922. It ceased to exist after the Unilateral Declaration of Egyptian Independence in 1922 and the establishment of the Kingdom of Egypt, and its last phase was marked by the 1919 Egyptian revolution and the coronation of Fuad I. Its capital was Cairo, and it shared a condominium over Anglo-Egyptian Sudan with Britain. In 1917 it had about 12.75 million inhabitants.
