The Copperbelt is the mineral-rich region of south-central Africa straddling the border between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, named for its exceptionally large copper and cobalt deposits. One of the world's most important sources of copper since large-scale mining began in the early twentieth century, and more recently a leading global source of cobalt for batteries, the region's economy and urban development have long been shaped almost entirely by the mining industry and its fluctuating fortunes.
