Colonia Junonia was a Roman colony founded in 122 BC under the leadership of Gaius Gracchus on the site of the destroyed city of Carthage, in what is now Tunisia, and is remembered as the first transmarine Roman colony. Many Romans viewed the site as inauspicious, and superstitious accounts circulated of ill omens including wolves disturbing its boundary markers; the colony lasted only about three decades before Julius Caesar refounded Carthage on the same site between 49 and 44 BC as a major urban center.
