Hadrumetum

Northern Africa

Hadrumetum, known by many variant spellings and names, was a Phoenician colony that predated Carthage. It later became one of the most important cities in Roman Africa before Vandal and Umayyad conquerors left it in ruins. In the early modern period the site was the village of Hammeim, which today forms part of Sousse, Tunisia.
