Abkhazia

Abkhazia is a partially recognised state on the eastern coast of the Black Sea in the South Caucasus, internationally recognised by most of the world as part of Georgia. It existed as an autonomous republic within Soviet Georgia before declaring independence in July 1992, a declaration that triggered a war with Georgian government forces and left Abkhazia in de facto control of its territory after a Russian-brokered ceasefire. Its capital and largest city is Sukhumi, and it functions as a unitary presidential republic, though as of 2025 only Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Syria among United Nations member states recognise its independence, with Russia providing military and financial support that makes up roughly half of Abkhazia's budget.
