An inland sea between southeastern Europe and Asia Minor, connected to the Mediterranean through the Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara and the Dardanelles. Its deep basin is anoxic below roughly 150 meters, preserving ancient shipwrecks in near-pristine condition on its oxygen-starved floor.
