Bulgaria is a Southeastern European country on the eastern Balkans, bordered by Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece and Turkey. It declared full independence from the Ottoman Empire on 5 October 1908, having gained autonomy in 1878. It joined the European Union in 2007. Its capital is Sofia.
