North Macedonia is a landlocked country in the Balkans occupying roughly the northern third of the broader geographical region of Macedonia, bordered by Greece to the south, Albania to the west, Bulgaria to the east, Kosovo to the northwest, and Serbia to the north. It declared independence from Yugoslavia on 8 September 1991 and adopted its current name under the 2018 Prespa Agreement, effective 12 February 2019. It is a unitary parliamentary republic. Its capital is Skopje.
