Brunei is a country in Southeast Asia, on the northern coast of the island of Borneo. It is an absolute monarchy ruled by the Sultan, with a legal system fusing English common law and sharia-inspired jurisprudence. It gained independence from the United Kingdom on 1 January 1984.
