The region of Asia lying southeast of the Indian subcontinent and south of China, comprising a mainland peninsula and a vast archipelago of thousands of islands extending into the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Its position astride major sea lanes between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific has made it a maritime crossroads for trade and migration for millennia, and its equatorial and tropical monsoon climates support some of the world's most extensive rainforest cover.
