Laos, officially the Lao People's Democratic Republic, is a landlocked Southeast Asian country bordered by Myanmar, China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. It achieved full independence from France on 22 October 1953. Following a civil war from 1959 to 1975, the communist Pathet Lao established the current one-party socialist state. Its capital is Vientiane.
