Lapathus was an ancient city in northern Cyprus, near present-day Lampousa and Karavas, in a district called Lapethia, sited on a river of the same name opposite the Cilician town of Nagidus. Ancient sources differ on its founding, crediting either Phoenician settlers from Kition or Spartan colonists led by Praxander; it had a harbor and docking facilities, and during the Wars of the Diadochi the city's king Praxippus allied it with Antigonus against Ptolemy. The city minted its own coins bearing the names of Phoenician rulers, including dmwnks, sdqmlk, andr and a second dmwnks, depicting Athena and Heracles, and inscriptions have clarified the Phoenician form of the city's name as LPS.
